In late October this year, Manningtree Squadron’s Flight Sergeant M. Smith, was part of the training staff for the Autumn Camp at RAF Akrotiri in Cyrpus. His main responsibilities for the week were: second in command for the Camp Warrant Officer, Accommodation Administrator and the Flight Commander for C flight.
62 Cadets flew from the UK to Cyprus from Air Cadet Central, Eastern, London and South East Regions and were accommodated in Chalet style billets with all catering and services provided on the base. RAF Akrotiri currently hosts 84 Squadron Search and Rescue, the American U2 Aircraft and is also used for decompression of troops returning from Afghanistan.
“Temperatures were regularly in the 30’s with perfect weather for all the activities during week. These included: Flying, go-karting, L98 and .22 rifle shooting, visits to the Fire Section, 84 Squadron, The Olive Harvest U2 Hanger, Joint Services Health Unit, a day visit to the beach, a trip to Northern Cyprus for a day rounded of with an end of week party. A fantastic experience was had by all cadets and staff alike.”
